About Greenies
Greenies was founded in 1996 by Joe and Judy Roetheli, who developed an early dental chew to improve the breath of their family dog and built the recipe in North Kansas City, Missouri. The Nutro Company acquired the brand in 2006 and folded it into Mars Petcare the following year, and Greenies dental treats are still manufactured in Kansas City today. The feline side of the brand grew out of that same dental-health focus: the Feline Natural Dental Treats line, and later the SmartBites and Pill Pockets ranges, apply the same VOHC-tested approach to cats that made the dog chew the category leader.
The flagship Feline Natural Dental Treats carries a Veterinary Oral Health Council seal for reduction of tartar accumulation, first awarded in 2005, one of a small number of cat dental products to hold an independent VOHC claim rather than an on-pack marketing statement alone. The SmartBites line extends that formulation work into everyday treats built around a specific job, indoor hairball control, low-calorie snacking, or kitten development, each running under two calories a piece with no artificial flavors, preservatives, or fillers by the brand's own published formulation.
