About Biokleen
Biokleen was founded in 1989 by Jim Rimer, a chemical-supply sales rep in Portland, Oregon, who left the industry over health concerns with the cleaners he was selling and spent nights studying chemistry and botany to formulate plant-based alternatives in his own garage. The company launched its enzymatic Bac-Out line in 1991, built around live enzyme cultures that digest organic stains and odors rather than masking them. Biokleen is now part of PurposeBuilt Brands, whose consumer portfolio also includes Weiman and Goo Gone.
The Bac-Out line spans fragrance-free and lightly-scented sprays, a concentrate, a foaming spray for vertical surfaces, and a bathroom cleaner, sold for pet stains, laundry pre-soaking, carpets, furniture and more. Biokleen states its formulas contain no added artificial fragrance beyond what is named on the label, no dyes, no phosphates, no chlorine and no ammonia, and that it has never tested a product on animals. In our reviews, two Bac-Out sprays stood out: a fragrance-free formula explicitly rated for mattresses and pillows, and a lime-scented spray built for pre-soaking old or heavily soiled cat-urine laundry.

Why we recognized Biokleen
The House of Mittens Top Brand recognition isn't paid for and can't be applied for. We award it to the brands whose products consistently stand out in our vet-reviewed category guides. Biokleen earned it on the strength of the products below, evaluated the same way every product on this site is: assessed against feline-health criteria, used with real cats, and judged on merit.
