About Royal Canin
Royal Canin was founded in 1968 in Aimargues, France, by veterinary surgeon Dr. Jean Cathary, who developed the company's first cereal-based diets to help dogs with skin and coat conditions. The brand became part of Mars Petcare in 2002 and today produces roughly 260 distinct formulas across life-stage, breed-specific, and veterinary-diet lines for both cats and dogs.
Formulations are developed with board-certified veterinary and PhD nutritionists and are validated against AAFCO, FEDIAF, and NRC nutrient standards through feeding, palatability, and digestibility trials, an approach Royal Canin documents publicly against WSAVA's own guidance for choosing a pet food. The brand runs its own research centers, including a facility in Lewisburg, Ohio, and collaborates with the Waltham Petcare Science Institute, backed by a manufacturing network that Royal Canin says runs more than 500,000 quality analyses on raw materials and finished products each year.
