About Instinct

Instinct traces back to 2002, when the Milligan family, who ran a meat-processing business for the human food market, was asked by the Lincoln Children's Zoo for help after its big cats began showing reproductive problems. Drawing on their meat-processing background, the Milligans formulated a raw, meat-based diet for the zoo's animals, and keepers soon reported shinier coats, leaner muscle, better oral health, and resolved reproductive issues. The family then worked with University of Nebraska-Lincoln researchers and PhD-level nutritionists to formalize the diet into what became the first complete-and-balanced raw pet foods, launched under the Nature's Variety name before the raw-format line was rebranded Instinct. The company is now headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri, with a company-owned manufacturing facility in Lincoln, Nebraska, and has been part of Barcelona-based consumer goods group Agrolimen since 2016 while continuing to operate as a standalone brand.

Instinct built its identity around raw-format nutrition long before it became a mainstream category, and its lineup still spans frozen raw meals, freeze-dried raw meals and toppers, and raw-coated dry kibble that pairs standard pieces with freeze-dried raw for added nutrition and taste. Across its recipes the company holds to the same formulation line: no grain, corn, wheat, soy, by-product meal, carrageenan, or artificial colors and preservatives, ever. That whole-meat, clean-label approach is what stands out most in its wet canned cat food, where named animal protein leads the ingredient list and taurine is added for heart and eye health -- the profile an obligate carnivore is built for.

Why we recognized Instinct

The House of Mittens Top Brand recognition isn't paid for and can't be applied for. We award it to the brands whose products consistently stand out in our vet-reviewed category guides. Instinct earned it on the strength of the products below, evaluated the same way every product on this site is: assessed against feline-health criteria, used with real cats, and judged on merit.
