Cat Chonk Chart

Find your cat on the chart, from A Fine Boi to OH LAWD HE COMIN', then check by feel to see what a vet would actually call it. Every level is matched to the 9-point body condition score. No signup, no ads.

Cat chonk chart tool: tap the cat that looks most like yours, then check by feel to place your cat on the chart with its veterinary body condition score.

1 Tap the cat that looks most like yours

Thin to chonk, left to right

Tap a cat above, or answer the four hands-on checks below, and your cat's chonk level appears here with what a vet would call it.

2 Now check by feel, because fluff lies

0 of 4

These are the four checks a vet does in the exam room. Your answers set the score, and the score sets the chonk level.

1. Feel along the ribs

Lay your palm flat on your cat's side and run it gently over the rib cage - the way you'd feel the knuckles on the back of your own hand. Go by feel, not by looks.

2. Look down from above

Stand over your cat while they're standing and look straight down at the outline behind the rib cage.

3. Look from the side

Crouch down level with your cat and look at the belly line between the rib cage and the back legs.

4. Check the belly pad

Most cats have a normal loose flap of skin here called the primordial pouch. Feel it: a pouch is skin, a fat pad is thick and soft all the way through.

lb

Long-haired or fluffy? A Maine Coon in a winter coat can look like a Heckin' Chonker and feel like a Fine Boi. Trust your hands on the ribs over your eyes.

Kitten, pregnant or nursing? The chart and the vet scale are for adult cats. Track a growing kitten on the kitten weight chart by week instead.

The chonk chart is a joke. Your cat's health isn't. This tool places your cat using the 9-point veterinary body condition score, but it's a screening estimate, not a diagnosis. Have your vet confirm any level other than Fine Boi, and never crash-diet a cat: fast weight loss can cause hepatic lipidosis, a dangerous liver disease. How to use the cat chonk chart

  1. Tap the cat that looks most like yours. The chart runs left to right from too thin to OH LAWD HE COMIN'. Your pick shows up straight away, along with what a vet would call it.
  2. Then check by feel. Tapping fills in the four checks with a typical cat at that level. Put your hands on your cat and change any answer that doesn't match. Ribs first, because a coat can't fake those.
  3. Answer the bonus question if it appears. At the very top of the scale, one extra question about moving and grooming decides between Megachonker and OH LAWD HE COMIN'.
  4. Add a weight if you know it. It turns the chonk level into pounds: roughly what your cat should weigh, and how much to lose or gain.
  5. Share it or print it. Copy the result, send the link (it remembers your answers), or download a one-page chonk report to take to the vet.

Why this chonk chart is different

Search for a cat chonk chart and you get the same picture over and over: on Reddit, on Pinterest, on posters and coasters. It's a great joke. It just can't tell you anything about your own cat, and the body-fat figures that get attached to it online don't come from any study.

  • You place your own cat. Tap a level, then answer four hands-on questions. Nobody else turns the meme into something you can actually use.
  • Every level is tied to a real vet scale. Each tier maps to the 9-point feline body condition score, the system vets use in the exam room, so He Chonk means a score of 6 and roughly 10% over ideal weight.
  • Fluff can't fool it. The score comes mostly from what your hands feel on the ribs, and the loose belly flap most cats have is weighted so it can't push a Fine Boi up the chart.
  • It does the maths in pounds. Add a weight and you get an estimated ideal weight and how far there is to go.
  • A vet reviewed it. Dr. Priya Anand checked the mapping, and an automated test confirms on every build that each level returns the score it should.

How the chonk levels are worked out

The chonk chart went viral in late summer 2018: a cat body-fat chart relabelled with joke names and shared across Twitter and Reddit. The meme never defined its levels, so this tool anchors each one to the 9-point feline body condition score (BCS), developed by Laflamme and validated against DEXA body-composition scans. It's the scale the WSAVA Global Nutrition Committee and the AAHA weight-management guidelines refer to, and 5 out of 9 is ideal for most adult cats.

Your four answers produce the score, using the same engine as our cat body condition score tool:

BCS = round( 0.40 × ribs + 0.25 × waist
           + 0.20 × side profile + 0.15 × belly pad )

Then the score picks the chonk level:

Chonk levelVet scoreVs. ideal weightApprox. body fat
Too thin (off the chart)BCS 1 to 310 to 40% underunder 15%
A Fine BoiBCS 4 to 5at ideal15 to 24%
He ChonkBCS 6about 10% over25 to 29%
A Heckin' ChonkerBCS 7about 20% over30 to 34%
Hefty ChonkBCS 8about 30% over35 to 39%
MegachonkerBCS 940% or more over40 to 45%+
OH LAWD HE COMIN'BCS 9, mobility affected40% or more over40 to 45%+

The weight column uses the standard veterinary rule that each point above 5 is about 10% of body weight. The vet scale stops at 9, so the chart's two top levels share a score. They're separated by the one thing the meme itself draws: a cat so heavy that walking, jumping and grooming have become hard work.

The honest limitation: body condition scoring is a hands-on judgement, and even two vets often land a point apart. Treat the result as a screening estimate that tells you which direction to go.

Three worked examples

The tabby with the swinging belly

She looks like a Heckin' Chonker from across the room because her belly flap sways when she trots. But her ribs are easy to feel, she has a gentle waist from above, and her belly tucks up slightly from the side. The tool scores her a 5: A Fine Boi. That flap is the primordial pouch, and it's normal.

The 15-pound ginger

You have to press firmly to find his ribs, there's no waist at all, and his belly hangs below his rib cage. That's a score of 8, Hefty Chonk, about 30% over ideal. At 15 lb, his ideal weight works out near 11.5 lb, so roughly 3.5 lb to lose. At a safe pace that's several months of measured meals and more play, agreed with his vet.

The 20-pound cat who can't reach his back

No ribs to feel even pressing hard, fat over his lower back and face, and he's stopped grooming his rear end. That's a score of 9 with mobility affected: OH LAWD HE COMIN'. Because the vet scale tops out at 9, his ideal is 14.3 lb or less and he has at least 5.7 lb to lose. This one is a vet visit first, since matted fur, urine scald and arthritis pain often come with it.

Frequently asked questions

What are the levels of the chonk chart?

The meme has six: A Fine Boi, He Chonk, A Heckin' Chonker, Hefty Chonk, Megachonker and OH LAWD HE COMIN'. In vet terms that runs from a body condition score of 4 or 5 (ideal) up to 9 (severely obese). We add a seventh, off the left edge, for cats that are too thin, because the original chart leaves them out.

Is a Heckin' Chonker overweight?

Yes. A Heckin' Chonker matches a body condition score of 7, which is about 20% over ideal weight and roughly 30 to 34% body fat. It's the level where a vet will usually suggest a proper plan: a calorie target, measured meals and slow loss.

What does "OH LAWD HE COMIN'" mean?

It's the top level of the chonk chart and became a catchphrase for anything enormous heading your way. For a real cat it means a body condition score of 9, the top of the vet scale, with enough weight that moving and grooming are affected. It's the one level on the chart that needs a vet visit soon.

Is the chonk chart accurate?

The meme on its own isn't a measurement, and the body-fat percentages often attached to it online have no source. What makes this version useful is that each level is tied to the 9-point body condition score, and your cat is placed by what you feel, not by how fluffy they look.

How do I get my chonky cat to lose weight safely?

Slowly. Aim for 0.5 to 2% of body weight a week, which means months, not weeks. Measure every meal, keep treats to about a tenth of the day's food, and add short daily play. Never cut food drastically: a cat that stops eating can develop hepatic lipidosis. Our cat diet calculator turns a target weight into daily calories and portions.

The tool suggests a few products that fit your cat's level. Most of the work happens at the bowl, so start with the food: Dr. Anand's guide to the best cat food covers lower-calorie options, and an automatic cat feeder keeps portions fixed when a cat has learned that yelling at dawn gets results. For the exercise side, a wand from our best cat toys list and some climbing space from a sturdy cat tree burn calories a diet can't.

Methodology & sources

Chonk levels are a House of Mittens mapping, reviewed by Dr. Priya Anand, onto the 9-point feline body condition system. The score uses the same weighted model and descriptors as our body condition score tool (ribs 0.40, waist 0.25, side profile 0.20, belly pad 0.15), imported from the same code, so the two tools can't disagree. Body-fat bands come from the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention. Weight estimates use the WSAVA/AAHA convention that each point away from 5 is about 10% of body weight. An automated test runs on every build and checks every vet score against its chonk level, the top-level split, the weight maths and each figure quoted on this page.
