About Hartz
Hartz traces back to 1926, when a young German immigrant named Max Stern arrived in New York with a shipment of singing canaries and began selling them to retailers like Macy's and Woolworth's. The company grew from bird seed into packaged pet food, then expanded into dog and cat products through the 1960s, including the flea and tick collar that became one of its longest-running lines. Today the company is headquartered in Secaucus, New Jersey, and operates as a joint venture between Sumitomo Corporation and Japan's Unicharm Corporation, with a catalog that has grown to more than 1,500 products across species.
For cats specifically, Hartz's range spans flea and tick prevention under its UltraGuard line, wet treats under the Delectables name, interactive toys such as the Just For Cats variety packs, Comfitables disposable diapers, and functional soft chews including the Hairball Remedy Plus line our own review covers. That hairball chew names psyllium seed husk and omega 3-6-9 oils from salmon meal and canola oil directly on its ingredient panel, and its label is one of the few in our roundup written to cover kittens as well as adult cats.

Why we recognized Hartz
The House of Mittens Top Brand recognition isn't paid for and can't be applied for. We award it to the brands whose products consistently stand out in our vet-reviewed category guides. Hartz earned it on the strength of the products below, evaluated the same way every product on this site is: assessed against feline-health criteria, used with real cats, and judged on merit.
Hartz products we rated highly
Hartz Hairball Remedy Plus Chicken Flavored Soft Chews for Cats and Kittens
Owners in our review reported results within a day, faster than most of the fiber-led products we tested, and it's the only soft chew in our lineup whose own label covers kittens alongside adult cats. Psyllium seed husk and omega 3-6-9 oils from salmon meal and canola oil are named directly on the ingredient panel, and the resealable bag helps the chews stay soft between uses. Priced to support a daily routine across multi-cat households, it holds a 4.0-star rating across more than 5,500 reviews on Amazon.
