About Solid Gold
Solid Gold was founded in 1974 by Sissy Harrington-McGill, a Great Dane breeder in San Diego, California, who lost two of her dogs to bloat and, on a trip to Germany to buy a replacement, noticed that German-bred Danes fed on real meat, whole grains, and vegetables were living longer, healthier lives than their American counterparts raised on rendered by-products and fillers. She launched the brand's first recipe, Hund-N-Flocken, built on that European approach, and Solid Gold is widely credited as one of the pioneers that launched the holistic pet food category in the United States. The company marked its 50th year in business in 2024.
All Solid Gold dry cat foods, treats, and supplements are made in the USA; its tuna-based canned cat foods are made in Thailand, in facilities that also process tuna for human consumption. Every dry recipe supplies natural prebiotic fiber alongside protected probiotics, the gut-health-first formulation the brand has centered since its founding. Solid Gold is now a brand of H&H Group, a certified B Corp, following a 2014 acquisition by VMG Partners.
