About Life Essentials by Cat-Man-Doo
Cat-Man-Doo was founded in late 2004 by Peter Stake and Sandra Stake in the Seattle area, after Peter began hand-packaging human-grade Bonito flakes sourced through a seafood-distribution contact and selling them to a Pacific Northwest pet chain out of his garage. The company moved into a Redmond, Washington warehouse in 2006 and into fully automated production by 2014, and it still nitrogen-flushes its flakes for freshness, the same technique used in packaging potato chips and cereal. By its own account the company has more than a 20-year history selling into pet stores, distributors, veterinary clinics, grooming shops, and shelters.
The Life Essentials line extended the brand beyond Bonito into single-ingredient freeze-dried chicken breast and wild Alaskan salmon, with a sirloin beef treat added in 2018. Each Life Essentials treat is built around one named protein with no additives, fillers, or preservatives on the label. Our own testing featured the Freeze-Dried Chicken, an all-white-breast-meat treat that is fully cooked before freeze-drying rather than freeze-dried raw, which removes the raw-pathogen question some households need to avoid.

Life Essentials by Cat-Man-Doo Freeze-Dried Chicken Cat Treats, 5 oz
The ingredient panel is one word long, chicken, which makes it a treat we can recommend without adding a variable to a food-elimination trial. It is all-white breast meat rather than mixed trim, so the protein stays clean of fillers, grains, or preservatives. The chicken is fully cooked before it is freeze-dried, removing the raw-pathogen question that matters in homes with infants, elderly relatives, or anyone immunosuppressed. At five ounces it is a real step up in size from the one- and two-ounce pouches most single-ingredient treats ship in, and in our reviews it holds a 4.7-star average across more than twenty-seven hundred ratings, the strongest score in that roundup.
